The State of the Beaches and General Cleanliness of the Island

The Report
It is probably on all of our minds, why
the beautiful beaches on Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and even mainland
Thailand are neglected. The beaches especially in Samui are constantly
littered with coconuts, wood debris, plastic bottles and general
garbage, which is not a pleasant sight for locals or tourists. Some
areas, i.e. Chaweng, where there are large resorts have their staff
attend this problem on a daily basis which is good, but why should they?
This job belongs to the district office of Koh Samui, and the beaches
should be cleaned daily, as we clean the roads of litter daily. It is
not uncommon to see a friendly face picking up litter on the side of the
road, but why don't we ever see them on the beaches. If tourism is
really going to flourish on Koh Samui as it apparently is, do we end up
with five star beachfront accommodation, and yet no attention given to
the beauty of the Samui beachfront. Even our own beach outside The Sands
Restaurant at our business location is raked daily by us, yet to the
left and right there is a pile of rubbish constantly brought in mainly
by high tides, and no one cares. We are proud of the cleanliness of our
beach and our guests enjoy a swim occasionally after lunch, but would
they do so if they had to walk through a pile of trash to get to the
water every day.
The second largest problem we have
regarding hygiene on the island is it should be mandatory for every
household, shop or business to have a bin provided, whether domestic or
commercial, for again keeping our island clean. For only 30 Baht per
month your house can have a wheelie bin provided, so we don't have to
burn of our rubbish, put in other people's bins or dump it on the side
of the road late at night as some people do. These two factors are of
concern to me and I am sure to you all of the time.
As to the state of the market, Emerald
Residence 1 in Bang Po sold for a reportedly 16.5 million, which was a
little lower than our estimation of around 18 million Baht. The
beautiful estate at Angthong Hills, especially the front plots seemed to
have sold out overnight, at record highs for mountain land at 6 million
per rai+, but the views are outstanding to Koh Phangan. There is still
good demand for good properties, beachfront or seaview, but the buyers
are becoming more choosy because of the amount of properties available
are vast, and there is definitely now a growth of bargain hunters in
this settling boom market, in Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and as far away as
Khanom.
Bang Makham and the west coast hills of
Koh Samui are definitely taking shape with prices as low as 2 million
Baht per rai being excellent buying in this current market. The sunsets,
the proximity to Nathon shopping, and the ever important financial
district, coupled with the link - port to the mainland at Nathon
means that the west coast is rapidly developing not as the quieter
side of the island as we all used to think.
